My Therapist: Kandy, The Dog

Our dog Kandy is my therapist. She is ALWAYS excited to see me, shows her feelings

very passionately and lets me know what she wants at any time. She requires from me to be present, connect with her simple dog life and always finds a way to make me laugh. All this happens of course without a word spoken – masterful!

Can you see the five genius values in this few lines that she triggers in me?

PASSION – the driving force for aliveness and live giving action, for inspiration, purpose and direction in life and business.

DIRECTNESS- there is no beating around the bush or second agenda; this kind of honesty is a refreshing shortcut.

PRESENCE – no worries about the past or future, rather a full involvement in the current situation.

SIMPLICITY – I always get out of my mind and into my body with her. Over-analyzing is a waste of time in a fast changing environment. Now, that is almost wisdom.

CONNECTION – Even the two halves of my brain disconnect when I get into information overload or feel overwhelmed. Kandy helps me to stay open and never shut down, to trust my brain and my body that I can handle anything I start and feel strongly about.

But wait, there is one more:

HUMOR – the Greek root of this word means ‘fluid’ and that is exactly how she prevents me from getting stuck and overly serious.

(When she won her first pillow fight!)

The Crab Mentality…

Remember Marianne Williamson’s famous poem “Return to Love”? She writes:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light that frightens us, not our darkness.”

Then I heard it again from Paul Coelho: “Only mediocrity is safe. Get ready to be attacked, and be the best.”

And finally my assistant Mariana showed me Sarah Robinson’s blog where she talks about a very common observation when collecting crabs at the beach: “More often than not, as a crab would begin to inch its way higher to the edge of the bucket, the other crabs would latch on to him and pull him back down.”

Crab mentality is actually an official phrase and roughly means “if I can’t have it, neither can you.” And it is talked about. A lot! Most likely it is one of the biggest obstacles to unfold innate genius all the way to a level of brilliance.

How about finding a community of passionate people who build a ‘crab ladder’ to aid your escape from the bucket of mediocrity? As you read this genius tip, you might have just found this kind of people. How does that sound to you? Stay connected…

Slow Down… Your Thoughts?

Here is my genius challenge for this week: Slow down your brain. Or is it your thoughts? Or is it your mind?

You see how perceptions of our own physiology might get confusing very quickly, unless we have a closer look into the basics: Slowing down your brain is impossible: It operates at 124 mph 24/7. However, you can impact the activities of specific brain areas with progressive relaxation or meditation/medication. Thoughts will always be at least 6 times faster than you can speak or listen – enough time to have your own thoughts and feelings while listening to a presentation.

Meditation leads you deeper into gut intelligence – the Latin word ‘medium’ means ‘middle’! The relaxation that comes with it leads to a deep insight: The combination of Physical Intelligence from the gut and mental intelligence from the brain leads to new insights as the source of wisdom and comes very spontaneously.

Here is the proof: Four year old children can give you amazing wisdom when they are relaxed and playful. Their bodies are still ‘mind all over’.

What Steve Jobs (Founder of Apple) and You Have In Common

Last Thursday I saw flowers and candles in front of the Apple store in Santa Monica.

Many eulogies and media comments on the internet connect Steve Jobs almost instantly with ‘genius’.  I feel very disappointed that he is no longer alive and able to share his unique genius with the world. It is very sad that his body and immune system were not strong enough to beat pancreatic cancer – against all odds.

His 313 patents and extremely visionary leadership that created one of the most successful companies in our time inspired millions of people worldwide and will give him a well deserved position in the category of Thomas Edison or Albert Einstein.

However, there is a different category of day-to-day genius that deserves our attention: Millions of extremely brilliant people that may be recognized only by a few dozens, a few hundred or a few thousand people. Do you know someone like this in your personal or professional environment?

RalphWaldo Emerson coined a phrase that describes all categories of genius: “Common sense is genius in its working clothes.”
